Manali is located at an altitude of 1829 metres and is one of the most popular hill stations in the Himalayan range of Himachal Pradesh. The town is surrounded by magnificent peaks including Hanuman Tibba, 7 Sister Peak, Friendship Peak, Patalsu Peak, Ladakhi Peak and Manali Peak. Located at the northern end of Kullu valley, Manali sits by the banks of the river Beas which originates here. According to legend, Rishi Ved Vyas wrote the epic Mahabharata at the source of the Beas with the help of Lord Ganesha.
Rohtang pass is the main attraction of Manali, accessible during May - October. Popular for snow and natural beauty.
Rohtang Pass
An ancient temple of goddess Hidimba surrounded by tall pine trees with a track for nature walk.
Hadimba Temple
Popular for cable car, paragliding, horse riding, trekking and skiing in winter. Located 12 km from Manali.
Solang ValleyManali is one of the best honeymoon destinations in India. Couples can enjoy Manali throughout the year. For those who like to be active and enjoy outdoor sports, the best period is March end to May end. Those who just want to relax and enjoy the scenery can visit during any season provided bus services from Delhi are running.
Tourists visit Kullu Manali throughout the year. During summer months the maximum number of tourists visit due to school holidays - but this is not necessarily the best season. The ideal time is when Rohtang opens for tourists while snow is still visible at the peaks.
Find the best season to visit ManaliMaximum temperature goes up to 22 degrees and may reach 25 degrees during summer months (May - July). Minimum temperature stays around 15 degrees. No woolens needed in summer at Manali town itself - but warm clothes are essential at Rohtang. Snow dresses are available for rent on the way to Rohtang. Do not expect snow at Manali town during summer - plenty of snow awaits on the way to Rohtang pass. Heavy woolens are required during winter months.
Manali Weather DetailsManali is the gateway to Lahaul Spiti - famous for its high-altitude Himalayan valleys. The town is blessed with rivers, mainly the giant Beas, almost surrounding it from all sides, with snow-covered peaks everywhere. The Pir Panjal range of Himalayan peaks greets every visitor as they arrive in Manali.
For local people, the apple harvest season runs from August to September. For the rest of the year - especially April to October - many locals are engaged in the tourist business. Manali attracts visitors of all ages, from young children to senior citizens above 70 years. For meditation, adventure sports like white water rafting, trekking, paragliding, zorbing, skiing and horse riding - Manali has something for everyone.
Manali opens up many opportunities for nature lovers and adventure enthusiasts alike. Chandratal is one of the most famous trekking destinations in the area. There are countless trekking routes in and around Manali - enquire at local offices for which treks are open and which require government permits. Rohtang Pass itself is a popular trekking destination. The Youth Hostel Association of India organizes several Himalayan trekking programs, family camping and nature study programs near Manali and Kullu.
There are plenty of hotels and resorts at Manali. Plan a minimum of two days to cover all the important places. Ask your travel agent to book a hotel by the side of river Beas for the best experience. Many hotels are available in New Manali area. For those wanting to avoid the busy town, beautiful resorts are available outside the main town by the river. Summer season (April to June) is peak tourist season - book hotels well in advance during this period.
The main market place is known as The Mall and is ideal for spending evenings after sightseeing. All types of Indian food are available here. The population of Manali is a mix of Kullus, Ladakhis, Tibetans, Kashmiris and Nepalis so shops on the Mall sell handicrafts from all these communities - mostly woolen items. On the way from Kullu there is a cooperative shop - the Kullu Shawl Factory - selling woolen materials at very attractive prices. Kullu shawls and Kashmiri salwar-kameez fabrics are among the most popular purchases. Shops selling Tibetan antiques are popular among foreign tourists.
Very close to Manali Mall, this monastery houses a giant statue of Gautam
Buddha.
Photography is allowed inside on a nominal charge of Rs. 5. Traditional
dresses of Himachal Pradesh for both men and women are available outside
the monastery - a popular way to get memorable photographs.

| Road is the only way to travel to Manali from Shimla. Public transport is available. You can hire vehicle from Shimla. You can continue to use same vehicle for your local trips at Manali also. However my personal preference is to use a local cab if possible. If you have plan to move out then visit Kullu shawl factory. You will get variety of woolen dresses at an attractive price. At Manali also you can get all these. You can bargain at shops and I don’t think you will face any problem at shops. I don’t have any bad experience in my two trips to Manali. | |

| It takes one full day drive from Shimla so it may take bit more from Kalka. Price will change based on season, so you can get one for around 1300 or 1400 / day . Rothang will open only in April. | |

| Aaditya | 28-05-2010 |
| Yes, you can definately get a vehicle from kalka to visit all the places you wish to. I reckon you hire a MUV say Tavera, Sumo, Qualis etc. They charge around Rs. 8.30 - 9.30 per km subject to the average minimum of 200 kms per day that means you will be required to pay for 200 kms per day on an average whether you travel that much or not. So more or less avg per day cost comes to around Rs. 2000.00 Mandi is around 185 kms from Kalka. Kullu is further 70 kms ahead. And Manali is 40 kms from Kullu. Two beautiful places not to be missed near Mnadi are Rewalsar and Prashar Lake. | |
