India tour & travel

Chhattisgarh State

Located at the central part of India, Chhattisgarh was carved out of Madhya Pradesh and became a separate state in November 2000. Raipur is the state capital. The state is rich in minerals — particularly iron ore — and hosts several steel plants and heavy industries. But it is the state's dense jungles, hills, spectacular waterfalls and ancient caves that make it a rewarding destination for travellers. The Bastar region in the south is the cultural and tourism heart of Chhattisgarh, known for its tribal communities, handicrafts, wildlife and the magnificent Indravati river.

Chhattisgarh State

Jagdalpur 🔝

In the south of Chhattisgarh, Jagdalpur is the headquarters of Bastar district and the main base for tourists exploring the region. The city has good hotel options, rail connectivity via the KK line from Visakhapatnam and road links to Raipur. Two of India's most spectacular waterfalls are within 40 km of the city, making Jagdalpur an ideal base for a two to three day trip.

Chitrakoot Waterfall 🔝

Often called the Niagara Falls of India, Chitrakoot is one of the finest waterfalls in the country. Located on the Indravati river at a distance of 38 km from Jagdalpur, the waterfall is remarkable for its distinctive C-shaped curve and impressive width. Boating is available to take you close to the falling water. The fall is most powerful during monsoon but visits are recommended year round — plan to arrive around 4 PM to enjoy both daylight views and the evening illumination. Entry is free.

Tirathgarh Waterfall 🔝

Located 36 km from Jagdalpur inside the Kanger Valley National Park on the Mugabahar river, Tirathgarh is best known for allowing visitors to descend to the very base of the falls via 210 steps. The experience of standing at the base with water crashing around you is unforgettable. The waterfall is visited together with nearby Kutumsar Cave as both are in the same direction from Jagdalpur.

Kutumsar Cave 🔝

One of India's most fascinating natural caves, Kutumsar is located inside Kanger Valley forest close to Tirathgarh waterfall. The cave is 330 metres long and 72 feet deep, with impressive stalactite and stalagmite formations. Its most unique feature is the presence of blind fish — small fish that have lost their eyesight due to generations of living in complete darkness. Local tribal guides lead visitors through the cave in batches. Private vehicles are not allowed inside — a jungle jeep must be hired for the 10 km forest track to the cave entrance.

Danteshwari Mandir — Dantewada 🔝

About 80 km from Jagdalpur in the town of Dantewada stands the Danteshwari Mandir — one of the 52 Shakti Peethas of India. This 14th century temple built by the Chalukya kings is dedicated to Goddess Danteshwari, the presiding deity of the Bastar royal family. The temple sits on the banks of the Dankini river and is the spiritual centre of the entire Bastar region. Dantewada railway station on the KK line is just 4 km from the temple making it easily accessible by train.

Best Time to Visit Chhattisgarh 🔝

The monsoon season (July–September) is the best time to see the waterfalls in full force — both Chitrakoot and Tirathgarh are at their most spectacular after heavy rains. October to February offers pleasant weather and is ideal for exploring caves, temples and the tribal culture of Bastar. The famous Bastar Dussehra — one of the longest Dussehra celebrations in India — takes place in October and is a unique cultural experience. Avoid visiting in the peak summer months of April to June when temperatures are high.
