Kalpa or Reckong Peo to Nako by road
Fill your vehicle with diesel or petrol at Reckong Peo. Start early from here if you want to reach Kaza in same day, it will take nearly 9 hours without any stay at Nako or Tabo. From Kalpa road comes down to Reckong Peo town and further down the road joins Poari Kaza road ( NH 22 ) at a distance of 5 KM ( From Peo ) . From here Sutlej river will be at your right side and the road passes through Stiff Mountains. After traveling 8 KM you will get a hot spring and after 15 KM you will cross Sutlej river. Before this bridge there is a restaurant, you can have your breakfast here. After crossing the river valley will be at your left side.
From Reckong Peo to Spello is 34 KM
From Reckong Peo to Poo is 55 KM
From Reckong Peo to Nako is 95 KM
From Reckong Peo to Tabo is 155 KM
From Reckong Peo to Kaza is 205 KM
After trevelling 34 KM , a small town Spello you will reach. Here restaurants are available for lunch
This road upto Poo is not in good condition. Many places road construction work is going on. There is always chance of road getting blocked by stone falling from hills. Border Road Organization is in charge of maintaining these roads does a good job in keeping the road open for traffic. The road from Reckong Peo to Spello town is the most troublesome one which gets blocked frequently.
At a distance of 69 KM from Reckong Peo Spiti river joins Sutlej river at Khab. From here a tunnel like road will take you towards Nako. Most of the time river and valley will be at your left side of the road and the view became very scenic with curly roads and barren hills upto a Y junction at Yangthang. From here right side road goes to Nako. This road passes just outside Nako village near the helipad. The Nako village monastery is visible from the road. You can take the straight road toward Tabo and Kaza or plan your stay at Nako. You can visit Nako lake and monastery in one hour and start your journey towards Tabo & then to Kaza.
Nako to Tabo ( 62 KM ) 2 Hours 30 Minutes
After starting from Nako you will cross Malinga, the road near Malinga gets blocked due to falling of stone from the hill. Bro ( Border Road Organization ) workers work through out the day from morning 9.00 AM to 5 PM daily cleaning the road. However some time it goes beyond their control and road gets blocked for more than a day. Bro works through out this area with heavy machinery to maintain the roads here. There are some areas where stone falling and the danger of road blocking is more. Between Poo and Reckong Peo road is bit dangerous and prone to landslides. Same way while going to Kaza just after Nako road gets blocked at Malinga.
After 21 KM from Nako you will reach Chango. At a distance of 34 KM from Nako there is Sumdo check post. All details of the tourist including the vehicle details are to be recorded here. From Sumdo check post Tabo is 28 KM and Kaza is 74 KM. After 9 KM from Sumdo you will reach Hoorling. From Hoorling Tabo is 19 KM. This road you will see barren clay color hills with snow at the peaks. No trace of any grass or tress could be found in these hills. Tabo monastery will be at your left side from the road.
You can stay at Tabo as guest houses are available or after visiting the Tabo Monastery you can start your journey towards Kaza ( 48 KM )
Tabo to Kaza ( 48 KM ) 2 Hours
This road is also very scenic with river at left side and high mountains close to the road. After traveling 23 KM towards right at top of a hill you can see Dhankar Monastery. You can climb up and visit the monastery. Before Kaza at your right you can see the road to Pin valley.
You can get the view of Kaza two 2 KM before from the main road. Lovely town with all facilities. Try to stay here for a minimum of two days.
