Chikmagalur is situated in the malnad region with rich green hills. As per an old story, the town was gifted as a dowry to the younger daughter of Rukmangada who is a devotee of Lord Vishnu.

Shimoga

Temples in Chikmaglur:
Sringeri mutt (temple) founded by Adi Shankaracharya is a Hindu pilgrim centre. Sringeri Sharadamba temple is located at the bank of river Tunga. Sringeri is 90Kms away from Chikmagalur town towards West-North. There is a temple dedicated to Vidyashankara and one more temple of Janardhana can be seen here. Sringeri has an old Jain Basadi dedicated to Parswanatha Theerthankara. There is a Sanskrit college in Sringeri teaching Vedanta and spiritual subjects. There are choultries and a guest house for visitors.

One of the Panch Kshetras is situated at Sompura on the banks of Bhadra river. Amritheswara temple (Hoysala temple) can be seen at Amrithapura which is at a distance of 70Kms from Chikmagalur. Veeranarayana temple at Belavadi is at a distance of 25Kms from Chikmagalur. At a distance of 45Kms, a Shiva temple is situated at Khandya (one more Pancha Kshetra). This place is situated at the banks of Bhadra river. Kalaseshwara temple is situated in Kalasa at a distance of 95 Kms from Chikmagalur (also on the banks of river Bhadra). Chennakeshava temple (Vishnu temple) is located at Marle, 12Kms from Chikmagalur town.

Hills and Valleys in Chikmagalur:
The Bababudangiri Hill Range is one of the highest mountain peaks between the Nilgiris and the Himalayas. These are also called Chandra Drona Parvatha. The peak of these hill range is nearly 1930 metres and is called Mullayyana giri. This place is 30Kms from Chickmagalur. Nearby, there are Gada Theertha, Kamana Theertha and Nellikayi Theertha famous waterfalls. Manikya Dhara water falls is a famous picnic place. A cave shrine, Dattatreya peetha is situated in this hill range.

The hill station Kemmangundi is also in the Baba Budan hill range. Kemmannu Gundi is 55Kms away from Chikmagalur town towards North-East. This hill range is also called Krishna Raja Hills. Hebbe waterfalls and Kalahasti are famous visiting places.

Horanadu is well known for its natural scenery. One of the oldest temple of Annapoorneshwari (Adi Satyatmaka Annapurneshwari) is located here. Horanadu is 100Kms from Chikmagalur.

Kudremukh is known for its spectacular natural beauty of hill station with deep valleys. This place gets its name due to the shape of the face of a horse. It is also rich in iron ores. The Iron ore is transported through huge pipes to mangalore for export. Kudremukh is located 80Kms towards West-South of Chikmagalur town.

Gangamula which is at a distance of 110Kms, is a hill place and well known as a picnin spot. Gangamula is believed to be the origin of Tunga, Bhadra and Netravathi rivers. Goddess Bhagavathi and Varaha can be seen here.

Wild life Sanctuaries:
Bhadra Wild life Satuary is at a distance of 40Kms from Chikmagalur. Forest safari available. This has been made in an area surrounded by many tributaries of Bhadra river.
