Kolkata old name was Calcutta.
This city is also known as city of joy. Kolkata is the capital of West Bengal state so there are many government buildings and Kolkata is also one business center of this part of India. One of the old building is Victoria Memorial is one of the beautiful architect of Kolkata and one of the main tourist destination.
If you want to go for shopping then Esplanade area is preferable. On the footpath you will find all varieties of materials but quality is not assured and you have to bargain a lot. One haversack for my trekking originally priced at Rs 970 but finally he agreed to give me at a price of Rs 400 . You can buy leather items from the shops at a good price, they are of good quality and many varieties will be available. Kolkata is famous for leather items.
Kolkata is also famous for Kali temple, the nearest Metro station is Kalighat, from the station it is 10 minutes walk. Inside the temple cameras are not allowed and mobile phones are to be switched off before entering to the temple complex. This temple is one of the oldest monument of Kolkata so around this temple you will find many old houses and narrow lanes giving you the glimpses of old days of Kolkata.

You can avoid morning travel to airport by Taxi by staying at airport. However there is no advance booking and the facility is available for those with valid ticket for next day. Contact Airport Manager office near Domestic arrival section to book dormitory or room. Near domestic arrival the pre paid taxi counter of Bengal Taxi Association is located. You can pay and take the receipt from the counter. Taxi number will be written in your receipt and you can take the taxi from the prepaid taxi stand.

Kolkata Metro can save you lot of time as traffic congestion is high at Kolkata. Metro is the best option while traveling long distance within Kolkata. Metro runs in two direction at Kolkata , one end is at Dum Dum ( towards Airport end ) & other end is Tollygunj the busy area of Kolkata. To go to your destination find out the nearest metro station. You can't use metro service with heavy luggage as you have to enter and exit the train quickly by passing through the automatic sliding doors. Kolkata metro uses magnetic strip tickets so preserve the tickets till your exit from metro as out and in gates are controlled by these tickets.
Taxi service at Kolkata
Metered taxis operate inside Kolkata city. Note that the meter will be running at a slow rate when the taxi stops at traffic junctions or in any other point. So along with the distance the duration of travel is also charged. You may have to pay more if you use taxi at peak office hours for the same distance. All taxis will have a rate chart which they multiply with the meter reading. At important places pre paid taxi booths are available.
There are two main railway station of Indian railway. The busiest railway station is Howrah ( code : HWH ) & other station is Sealdah ( Code : SDAH ). The famous Howrah bridge ( known as Rabindra Setu ) is located near Howrah station and it connects Howrah to Kolkata main. From these two stations trains are available to different part of India. These two stations are well connected by road by taxi, bus & trams. Take a taxi from pre paid counters of these stations to go any where in Kolkata.
