Ooty Hill Station: reaching and local transport

Ooty is known as queen of hill stations, located inside Tamilnadu sate of South India. This place is also officially known as Udhagamandalam. One must visit this hill station located inside Nilgiris particularly if you are in South India. You can plan for two full days to cover all places or Ooty and small town of Coonoor. Ooty main attraction is its natural beauty and cool temperature even in hot summer. You need light woolen clothes ( for kids at least ) in hot months of April and May. You must be prepared for occasional rains hitting this hill station mostly in afternoon hours.

We were at Ooty the queen of hill stations at 1 PM, it was very cool at Ooty even in the hot summer of the month of May. There were Auto drivers showing different tariffs cards of hotels. Select your hotel from the platform itself. There is plenty of hotels available matching to your budget but I was told that the situation changes during some pick seasons and some special occasions like flower shows. So better book your hotel in advance if possible.

Reaching Ooty
One can reach Ooty by road or by train. There is an enjoyable toy train connects Mettupalayam and Ooty. Ooty is connected by road from Mysore city ( Karnataka state ). Most of the local traffic comes from Coimbatore via Mettupalayam by road. The nearest airport is at Coimbatore and regular flights from Chennai and other parts of the country available here. Local Transport at Ooty
We haired a TATA Sumo (Tata Utility Vehicle), this vehicle is comfortable for two small families or for seven to eight persons. For a price of Rs 350 it took us for local sightseeing. But we have not covered many distance places due to lack of time. It took us to Rose garden, Boat House ( Lake ), Government Botanical Garden ( must visit at Ooty ), Children Park. These places are within the town limits of Ooty. Three hours in enough to go for a quick round of these place ( without spending time on boating etc ). Spend more time at Rose garden and Botanical garden as Park and boating are available at many places ( not only at Ooty ). Next day the same vehicle charged us Rs 700 for visiting all places of Coonoor town and another Rs 900 for dropping us at Coimbatore. We left Ooty at 8.30 AM and after visiting Coonoor we came down the Nilgiri hills. After taking our lunch at Mettupalayam ( foot hill of Nilgiri hills ) we left for Coimbatore at 1.45 PM to catch our bus to Cochin, our next destination. Our bus left Coimbatore at 2.45 PM and at 7.30 we were at Cochin.
