As Ooty is situated at southern part of India, many tourists reach here through Bangalore and Mysore. Mysore is the main place to start towards Ooty. Unless people wish to travel in Southern part of Tamilnadu and Kerala, this is the usual route one can take to enjoy on the way site seeing places which include variety of nature scenic views.
The distance between Mysore and Ooty is 160Kms via Gudalur and 130Kms via Kallatty.
Daily trip packages are available from Mysore to visit Ooty in various packages. The one day
package covers Mysore to Ooty, lake visit at oty, Botanical garden and return to Mysore.
There is two days trip also available. The second day, Ooty-Coonoor package is covered.
As per the brochure available from travel agents, the journey from Mysore to Ooty is through,
Bandipur Wild life sanctuary, Madhumalai forest, Frog hill, Kallahatti water falls, Ooty tea
estates, Ooty city (commercial street), Ooty lake and boating, Ooty Botanical garden and Ooty
town shopping.
Below are the details of one day trip from Mysore to Ooty.
Starting at Mysore
Tourists making their arrangements through private vehicles can properly plan to see more visiting places in this route.
As per the agents, the trip is supposed to begin at 7.30am but it starts at 8.45am and continues
through Nanjangud and Begur. The first break is at Gundlupet which is 60Kms from Mysore
for breakfast (tiffin) and refreshments. Gundlupet is the junction point for three states,
Karnataka, Kerala and Tamilnadu. Kerala border is just 40Kms to the right of this place.
There are shops available at this area selling sandal wood and silk items.
Beware of higher costs on these items here. After 8Kms from Gundlupet,
people travelling by private vehicle can take right turn at a place called Hangala
to visit Gopalaswamy Betta (Hill) which is only 6Kms from here. Excellent view
of Madhumalai and Nilgiri forest can be seen and the place is very pleasant.
Bandipur wildlife sanctuary begins at 15Kms from Gundlupet. This is the second largest
wild life sanctuary in India with 840 Sq Kms of area. The entry fee for Bandipur and Madhu malai
forest area is INR 50 (both the forest included) per head. People travelling by package have
to pay separately to the agents as this is not included in the standard listing.
Passing through wild life
After passing through the Bandipur guest house and cottages, the Karnataka and Tamilnadu states
border occurs at kakkanallah. Madhumalai wild life sanctuary starts from here. Next to this
check post, there is a junction point at Madhu malai elephant camp. Singara maya river also can
be seen at this point. From this point, people can travel towards Ooty either through Gudalur,
taking right turn or via Kalhatty continuing straight. Ooty is 67Kms from this junction
through Gudlur and 36Kms via Kalahatty.
Ghat section
Next to see is the first village in Tamil Nadu state called Masingudi. Ooty is 30Kms from here.
The starting point of Kalhatti ghat area begins after 10Kms from Masinagudi. The ghat section
journey is 20Kms with 36 hair pin bends. On the way there are several view points including tea plantation (estates). People travelling
by private vehicles have advantages of enjoying these as they can stop their vehicles to their
wish. Travel package don't have stoppages at these points. There is only one stop at a
tea shop to relax for 5-10 minutes. Before this place, Kalhatti water falls can be seen.
Breath taking valley view is available for the entire journey of this 20Kms. While going from
Mysore to Ooty, the valley view is more to the right side of the vehicle.
City of Ooty
Moving through Ooty city, people will first reach Ooty lake at about 1.15Pm. One hour time
is available for people coming through travel agents to spend time in this lake. Tourists will
be dropped at a hotel for lunch (to be paid by tourists only). After the lunch, travellers are
dropped at Ooty Botanical garden around 3.30pm. Visitors who are on one day package, have to
return by 5.00pm as they will be travelling again towards Mysore. People who have two days trip
package, will be dropped here (they shall have more time to enjoy in the garden) and they
have to take other means of transportation (by auto richshaw or walk) depending on the hotel
to check in which are booked prior to their arrival.
While returning, there will not be any stop until Gundlupet, reaching around 8.00pm. The next
stop will be at Mysore around 9.00pm. The returning journey is also in the same route. People
can insist on taking the other road via Gudalur as there are some more excellent visiting
tourists places. These include, Pykara water falls, dam, shooting spots etc...
