Gulmarg sightseeing

This is a scenic place located at a height of 8825 ft. At distance of 55 KM from Srinagar this is a popular winter sports destination. Gulmarg is also popular for the cable car ( rope way ) locally known as Gondola.

The original name of this place was Gaurimarg by shepherds. Gulmarg mean meadow of flowers. During spring and summer different flowers like bluebells, daisies and many other flowers gives a spectacular look to the total valley. In winter Gulmarg is popular for winter sports and the ski slopes attracts tourist from all over the world. Here different types of slopes are available for beginners and expert ski players. All types of Ski equipment are available. The ski lift and Gondola is an added advantage for the players here.

Travelling to Gulmarg.

Nearest Airport is Srinagar. From Srinagar after travelling 21 KM on National Highway 1A take a left turn towards Tangmarg – Gulmarg. From this Junction Mhgam is 9 KM and you can see snow peaks clearly from here. The hilly roads starts climbing from Tangmarg for 12 KM and reaches the parking place of Gulmarg. This 12 KM road from Tangmarg to Gulmarg was recently constructed and it is well maintained. Earlier pony was used at Tangmarg to take tourist to Gulmarg. The pony track is still in use by the horses and shepherd to travel to Gulmarg. During winter vehicles with chain on wheels travel in this road as snow cover this road fully. By clearing the snow in winters months this road is kept open for tourist. J&K tourism runs daily bus services from TRC( tourist reception canter ) at Srinagar to Gulmarg which starts around 8.30 AM in the morning and on return trip starts in evening from Gulmarg. Ticket is Rs 250 per head. You can start in morning from Srinagr and return in evening.

Shared Taxi are also available from bus stand at Srinagar.

There are several hotels available at Gulmarg and tourist from all over the world stay here for winter sports.

Golf ground

The 18 hole golf course is the highest golf ground in the world. The green carpeted meadows offer a pleasant view and considered as Golfer’s paradise. This Gulf club was established in 1902 with capt John Hills as first Honorary secretary.

There is a temple of Lord Shiva located at the centre of the green valley of Gulmarg. This red color temple known as Shree Mohineshwar Shivalaya is visible from the Gondola from all heights. This temple has featured in many Hindi movies shot here.

There is St. Mary’s Church and a Masjid at Gulmarg.

In addition to these there are several trekking routs and valleys located around Gulmarg. Some routs are
Gulmarg – Khilanmarg – Apharwat – Alpathar
Gulmarg – Danwas – Tejjan- Tosha – Tosha Maidan
Gumanrg – Kantanrmarg.

Horse Riding

Ponies are available here at a rate of Rs 300 per hour but don’t hesitate to bargain.
