Rohtang Pass near Manali

Manali is the gateway to Rohtang pass beyond which lie the twin valley of Lahaul and Spiti. In winter the mountain slopes are snow clad and they turn into perfect skiing slopes. This point is one of the main attraction for tourists coming to Manali. The Rohtang pass is 51 KM north of Manali and it is located on Manali Keylong Highway at an altitude of 4111 meters ( 13,400 ft ). This pass opens for tourist from April end to October end of the year. The permission to travel on this highway is given by Indian army after they clear the snow and inspect the road for it's fitness and safety for movement of person and the vehicles. The same road connects to Leh Ladakh ( State of Jammu & Kashmir ) from Manali ( state of Himachal Pradesh). Sonepani Glacier and a small lake (Dashahr) are located opposite and left to Rohtang respectively.

A full vehicle can be booked for a journey to Rohtang or one can use shared taxi. Only middle row or only front row of a jeep can be booked. There are taxi operators in most parts of the city and some good centers are there around Mall road whom you can contact for all travel requirements. Your hotel boy or manager can easily plan your travel arrangements.

The other hamlets around Manali also have houses embellished with wood carving. The Rohalla falls are on the way to Rohtang pass from Manali and are worth visiting. On the way to Rohtang at Beas Nallah one has to cross the river Beas. This river starts from here ( Beas Kund ) . There are daily bus tours to Rohtang pass.

Rohtang Pass is closed on Tuesday.

On the way to Rohtang pass one can find many food stalls serving variety of foods. You can get a cold drink as shopkeepers keep then in running water to maintain the temperature as there is no need of a refrigerator here. One can relish the food by sitting inside the low running water of the river Beas. There are some more important places to see and are listed below.

Nehru Kund:

Being a favorite place of Pandit Jawahar Lal Nehru, this place is named as Nehru Kund. One can see pure water rushing out of rocks. As per the local belief, the water has some medicinal effect. This place is just 6-7 Kms from Manali.

Kothi:

This is supposed to be the first village on the banks of Beas river. The area is scenic and many hotels are available to have refreshments and enjoy the nature. Kothi is located at 15Kms from Manali on hill top with curved roads.

Gulaba:

This place is considered as a picnic spot and starting point to Brighu lake trekking. The area is filled with beautiful flowers and very calm and pleasant. Gulaba is 20Kms from Manali.

Rahla Fall:

This water fall is from one of the branches of River Beas. The height of the water fall is nearly 50Mts. This fall is 27Kms from Manali.

Marhi:

This place is as famous as Rohtang pass. Fully covered with snow, all kind of water sports are available. Whenever Rohtang pass is closed due to bad weather conditions, people will be allowed to visit upto this place. The place is surrounded by lush green meadows. All kind of restaurants (both indoor and outdoor) are available for people. Marhi is 35Kms from Manali

Rani Nala:

This is the glacier where snow is available for the entire year. Rani Nala is 40Kms from Manali.

The main attraction for tourist at Rohtang pass is snow and the scenic beauty of the area. The road is very narrow near the Rohtang pass and the parking of vehicles is very difficult and one has to be very alert while parking the vehicles because slight distraction may be hazardous. Hence it is advisable to come here very early in the morning and stay upto afternoon and starts returning once the traffic gets clear. But if you start late to visit here then you may have to walk a bit or take help of horse to reach the peak point. Walking here is not a big problem but not advisable for elderly persons or small kids. It can be a 15 to 30 minutes walk depending on the traffic to reach the snow point from the parking area. The safest and the easiest way to reach the snow point is by horse ride but it is a bit costly ride, but elderly and the small children can comfortably use this service. The horse man charges around Indian Rupees 400 per trip ( both ways ) per horse. Tourists plan their trip in early hours to reach Rohtang very early to avoid traffic and reach at the snow point, at the same time it is equally difficult to return as all vehicles way down as to be clear the road. So going early mean returning late from there. Some time this may not be a good options for families with kids to stay long time in cold conditions. So other option is to start late and take the help of horses ( or walk ) to reach the top.

All types of food stuff, coffee and drinks are available at Rohtang pass and these are sold by local people. The weather here is highly unpredictable and it does not take much time for the bright sun shine to change over to moderate to heavy snow fall. The shop owners have provided some temporary sheds for the benefit of tourists/visitors to take shelter in case of sudden change of weather.

hi people,we made the trip to manali in 1973 and we walked up the pass,it took 2 days.we stayed 1 night with a mongolian? family we think they were working on the road,very kind hospitable people it only cost us a couple rupees for bed and evening meal.what a fabulous experience we will never forget it.stunning scenery and wonderful people.we reccomend it to all.it will cost a bit more now and there is more people but hey thats progress.

I visited Manali from 10th june to 14th june 2009 really manali is wonderful place to visit, great crowd, good people, good quality hotels and we didn't face any problem of foods as there are many punjabi hotels. all of the above Rohtang pass was great that huge mountains covered with snow great site really it is like heaven. Best time to go to Rohtang from Manali in peak season is in the morning because later in the day heavy traffic jams can cost you 3-4 hours so, go and enjoy

The chance of getting snow in second week of SEP is bit less. But you never know, the weather is very unpredictable and you may get the first snowfall :-). I went to Rohtang second week and October last year and it was completely snow covered that time.

I am member of YHAI (www.yhaindia.org).we have been invited from our National Office for the expedition of Keep Rohtang Pass Clean\'2010 on 25th of May at Marhi.The program was organised by our national head qtr and himachal govt.On 26th We reached at Marhi which is just 16 k.m. before from Rohtang Pass. It was our base camp.The shivering wind was blowing there.Next day there was heavy snowfall.The road towards Rohtang was blocked.So tourists enjoyed at Marhi a lot in snowfall.temp of marhi was below 5.We visited to tourists and explained them not to make dirty our beautiful tourism places.we 17 participants had been there till 31st of may.This was very unique experience for us.Name of our group was RP17 2010

During my excursion trip to Manali with wife and other family friends from 11th June 2010 onwards I visited rohtang pass but due to some glacier the road leading to rohtang was closed and therefore we enjoyed our return journey near a beautiful fall and snow clad mountains of rohtang pass. It was monsoon season in Manali,It was all raining despite of the heavy rainfall and landslides we went to Rohtang and got Struck there for Two days. My dream of snowplay & snowslide came true at ROHTANG. There were devdaar tree,huge rocks & water bodies fully covered with snow.It was a white HEAVEN of my living life. Though we were cought in heavy snowfall in evening at rohtang,we all friendz enjoyed snowslide,skying & walking over a white carpet for 2hrs with company of fullmoon in d sky. ya... never skip a cup of coffee in this cold & romantic weather with ur friendz or may be partner/loved once...it really works.

I had visited Simla, Kulu, Manali & Rohtang Pass thrice in past during Aug to Oct in 1984, 1989 and 1992. My experience was no less joyful than others who shared their experience in this column. I also visited the same places between 11th Oct and 17th October 2010. It was totally disappointing, especially the ROHTANG PASS. There was not even a single flake of snow and no trace of any Glacier. The effect of Global Warming !!! I think we are approaching disatser in very near future.

In summer rohtang is totally covered with snow while throghout the year we find snow there. Avoid to go aftr mid of july bcoz of landscapping due to monsoon. Solang valley is on the way of rohtang is also an awesome place. In manali, 3-4 famous temples, MG road, guest house(famous 4 games). Katrain, 20 kms before manali, marvelous place to spend your time in the outskirts of manali. Just check it out!

hi friends really THE SNOWPOINT OF ROHTANG PASS AT MANALI is a great place to visit especially during summers and begining of winters. Actually i have visited the snow point in the 1st week of winter the climate over here is very cool but its very nice who ever will go there will never forget d good days that they spend in manali especially in rohtang pass so friends plz do visit here atleast once in a life time its like a 2nd heaven in earth. We went to manali on 09.07.2011,the weather is awesome,neither excessive cold,nor excessive raining.although on 6th,7th and 8th there was continuous rain in Manali. We started for Rohtang Pass but coudnt reach there because of the landslides that has taken place due to rain,vehicles were struck on the way.so all the tourists were diverted to Mani.it was also very nice place- sort of a glacier,7000 feet height.Skeeing,tube rides etc were there. Regarding the climate-one can wear full length shirts or hardly one sweater. That is enough.Important information - local people were saying,all the rides like river rafting etc will be closed from 15.7.2011, because of the monsoon. So guys if you are planning a vacation,do it fast. Its really awesome place to visit.

hi friends, first we planned to go to shimla from chennai by car then planned to manali and finally it was rothang pass and the whole journey took nearly 10 days .and the people who saw that the vehicle was skoda laura and that was the only sedan and the only tamilnadu registration to reach rothang pass in 10 days then the road was little bit risky while nearing rothang and we really enjoyed a lot visiting rothang.....and it was 3480kms from chennai to rothang and with a return it took nearly 7420kms as we came by an another route.

Hi priya, Actually december is the perfect time to be in manali. M sure u will enjoy the snowfall. It doesnt snow much in manali, and it is occasionally in the month of jan, that snow reaches manali. You will travel little high till gulaba or much higher to find snow. Beleive me its a different and beautiful experience to be in manali in the month of Dec or Jan. U can move out of room, but of course dont forget to carry heavy woolens. There is a good hotel by the name of johnsons lodge.
